The most serialised novel for the screen is WM Thackeray’s Vanity Fair. Over the years, there have been seven adaptations for film and five for television, the most recent in 2018. The major attraction is an engaging storyline featuring Becky Sharp, a young woman with an eye for the main chance, sharp by name and sharp by nature. Olivia Cooke takes the role in this recent adaptation, and the critical response to her performance has been enthusiastic. ‘Olivia Cooke’s brilliant portrayal of the feisty and scheming Becky Sharp … makes this adaptation of Thackeray’s classic novel more relatable for a 21st century audience’.
She’s joined by Martin Clunes, Michael Palin, Frances de la Tour and a host of others, many of whom you’ll recognise.
After an introduction in the first session, we will look at episodes in successive weeks and discuss what’s happening, the characters, aspects of production, and so on. (Reading the novel is not required!)
