China’s Emergence as a Global Super Power @ Vintage Car Club
Nov 26 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Dragon Rising: China

Once regarded as the ‘sick man’ of Asia and with a tumultuous modern history stretching back over 2,000 years, the People’s Republic of China is now at the centre of the world stage.

A fast growing superpower with over 1.4 billion inhabitants, it has the second biggest national economy in the world after the United States along with increasing global political and financial influence.

This four part course explores the major philosophies, events and themes of Chinese history that have shaped China’s view of itself and its place in the world today.

Beginning with the first unifying Qin dynasty, the sessions will cover the imperial period and its legacies, early Western intervention, the rise of the republic, the civil war, the rule of Mao Zedong, the age of Deng and the current president’s ‘China Dream’.

The last session will particularly focus on China’s relevance to and influence in Australia.
