Biodiversity and extinction

A new report this week  describes the global situation. See below for commentary form ‘the Conversation’.

Editor’s note

A million species are facing extinction, according to a UN report released this week. It’s an eye-catching, heart-squeezing number.

But unfortunately, this is not news. The UN report compiled some 15,000 academic studies from around the world – this is information we already had. It’s very easy to be numbed to the endless waves of research documenting the decline of our natural world, but putting it all together gives it fresh weight.
